Blackstone Stoolball Club

Tuesdays/Thursdays

Ladies, are you interested in playing stoolball? Join us at the Blackstone Stoolball Club! We are a friendly bunch looking for new players of all ages 18+. No prior experience or knowledge of the game is necessary, anyone can play and it’s a great way to meet new friends, have fun and keep fit. We play at the Allfield Ground in Blackstone, with acres of space for all the family to enjoy.  We play Tuesday or Thursday evenings from May to September, starting at 6.30pm and usually finishing by 8.30-8.45pm. The club provides all equipment to play, you just need trainers and trackies or leggings or shorts. Our team colour is teal blue t-shirts, but this is not compulsory!

Stoolball is an exciting team sport. Two teams compete to score the most runs. There are two wickets standing at shoulder height, about 14 metres apart. The bats are willow, with a round face and a long, sprung handle. The ball, small and hard, is bowled underarm towards one wicket. Just like cricket, batsmen score by hitting the ball into the field and running between the two wickets. They can also hit the ball beyond a boundary line to score 4 or 6. Batsmen can be bowled, caught or run-out, or even body-before-wicket.

Initial taster games are free, with match fees £1 per game and club membership £10 a year. We are part of the Central Sussex Stoolball League and travel to away games in Partridge Green, Lindfield, North Chailey and Ditchling so transport is useful but lift-sharing with other team players is an option. Why not come along and try out a unique Sussex outdoor team game, similar to cricket, whereby two teams compete to score the most runs.
