Summer of Sound at Wakehurst

This summer Wakehurst will be brought alive by a symphony of sounds in their major new programme Summer of Sound. As you weave your way through Wakehurst’s wild landscape, you’ll discover six playful, innovative installations from award-winning artists, each offering moments to reconnect and restore your relationship with nature. Highlights include the UK premiere of mobile phone-activated robotic woodpeckers from Marco Barotti, giant wooden megaphones from Estonian artist Birgit Õigus, and two water-based sound installations from 2020 Ivor Novello Award for Sound Art winner Kathy Hinde. Championing the rich diversity of Wakehurst’s multiple habitats, the artworks offer an incredible range of sonic encounters from catching whispers of the forest, to uncovering voices from deep underwater.

In Summer of Sound: After Hours, Wakehurst opens to the public for four nights, offering a rare opportunity to experience the gardens and installations at sundown. Complete with captivating live performances, open-air cooking, and botanical cocktails, Summer of Sound: After Hours forms the perfect midsummer date or night out with friends. Throughout the summer, there will also be a series of interactive workshops for adults and children to enjoy from learning how to talk to birds, and writing Wakehurst-inspired songs, to Deep Listening Walks led by participating artist Kathy Hinde.
